Katrina Evacuee Who Faced Execution Gets Life Term

A Louisiana man who was sentenced to death now faces life in prison without parole for the murder of a Pasadena woman who helped him during the events of Hurricane Katrina.

Roosevelt Smith, Jr., 50, was found guilty of beating and strangling Betty Blair, 77, in October 2005.

His attorneys argued that he is mentally impaired and should not be executed for his crimes. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals agreed to change his sentence on Wednesday after he underwent a psychological evaluation.
