Texas Man Sentenced for Cocaine Smuggling

On Monday a Texas man was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a massive cocaine trafficking conspiracy.

Victor Lupo-Angulo pleaded guilty in January. At the time of arrest, he worked under a Houston woman named Claudia Perez-Leal who smuggled drugs across the U.S.-Mexican border from 2008 to 2010.

The court initially called for a minimum prison term of 20 years, but Angulo’s criminal defense attorney successfully argued for a lighter sentence because the defendant did not have a previous criminal record, nor did he possess a firearm when law enforcement apprehended him. Most importantly, though, he cooperated with officers.
